  • The Atrium by Ligon Flynn Wedding Photographers | Kristen & Chris

Atrium by Ligon Flynn Wedding Photographers

The Atrium by Ligonn Flynn was one of the first wedding venues I ever photographed in Wilmington when I first moved here in 2016. It instantly became one of my favorite places. The tropical greenery, the open ceiling, the secret garden vibe, all right in the heart of downtown Wilmington and walkable to quite literally all of my favorite photo locations. It is hard not to fall in love with this place. And then when you combine it with two incredible people, bringing two incredible families together, it really can’t be beat. Kristen and Chris chose the Atrium for their wedding day, Chris is from England, so all of his family came over from the UK, and you could tell everyone was so excited to be here. Their families were so kind and so supportive and so loving, it truly was a magical day. The florals were a dream, the taco bar for dinner was a 10 out of 10, the dance party and the games that they had set up were so fun. They played flip cup and I have to say, it was a first for me to see at a wedding and now I can’t recommend it enough! It was SO fun to watch everyone get into it. What a great day and what a great couple. Now scroll through these gorgeous images and see what I’m talking about!! CONGRATS KRISTEN AND CHRIS!!!!!

  • Amelia Grove Wedding Photographers | Katie & Ryan

Katie and Ryan chose the gorggggggeousssss Amelia Grove for their wedding venue, out in New Bern, North Carolina. We had a very on and off rainy day and I have to say, that didn’t take away from this beautiful location AT ALL. They were still able to have the ceremony outside, all our photos were able to go as planned, and what a perfect day it was. No stress, lots of love, endless Spanish moss hanging from the trees, so many strands of string lights, literally all of my favorite things. Katie and Ryan were just a pleasure to work with and to be around, making the day so easy to capture! Their families were so happy to be there, celebrating alongside them, with the biggest smiles all day long, and the sweetest speeches to the couple. Thanks for being so wonderful, you two, now here are some highlights from their day!!

  • Oak Island Wedding Photographer | Bre & Dolph

Oak Island is a gorgeous, and dare I say underrated, beach near Wilmington, North Carolina. A short 45 minute drive from our city and you find yourself on a beach that is like, HALF as populated as Wrightsville Beach, which just so happens to make the perfect location to host a wedding. Bre and Dolph have had a deeeeeep love for the beach and for Oak Island for a long long time, Bre’s parents talked a lot about her love for the beach since childhood (same, girl) so I can’t think of a better place to hold their big day. They picked the most GORGEOUS beach house all the way at the end of the island, and it felt like they had rented this whole part of the beach for just us, it was perfect. An ocean-front ceremony, followed by dinner on the pool deck of the beach house, followed by dancing and what we can only call a rave happened upstairs on the rooftop level of the house. Surrounded by the sunset and ocean views, they danced the night away, and it was genuinely such a great day. Imagine feather boas, confetti poppers, and DJ lights. I am repeatedly astounded by the types of humans that I get to work with, and Bre and Dolph were no exception. They were so fun and easy to be around, and they were seriously just so beyond thrilled to get to marry each other, you could just tell by the way he looked at her. It made me get SAPPY. Their love was such a joy to capture, and they are literal couple goals. Okayyyyyy I’ll stop rambling about how obsessed I am with them now and just show you the photos :)

  • Wrightsville Manor Wedding Photographers | Lauren & Bond

Wrightsville Manor is one of the most popular wedding venues in Wilmington, North Carolina. It’s so beautiful that even Lauren and Bond, who live in California, decided to book it from across the country without even seeing it in person! But I was happy to be able to let them know, as someone who has worked there many times, that they will not be disappointed in their decision. Turns out, it was PERFECT for their big day. Not only did these two choose an epic venue, but they also were just the most incredible people to be around. They are so fun, laid back, silly, I found myself laughing all day long and wishing it wasn’t time to leave when my time was up. The toasts (aka roasts) that their friends and family made were SO special, SO funny, my face literally hurt from laughing. Their guests couldn’t resist lifting them up in chairs on the dance floor, even their parents got a turn. From the gorgeous vintage yet modern details, to the soft color scheme, to the exposed wood tables, the disco balls hanging from the trees, the love and the dancing and the excitement, I’d call it a 14 out of 10. Lauren and Bond, y’all are stuck with me for life, now.

Oh! And they booked my 35mm film package, so scroll to the end to see my favorite film shots of the day, too!

  • Airlie Gardens Wedding Photographers | Hayley & Zach

Airlie Gardens is hands down one of the most gorgeous locations in Wilmington, North Carolina. Every time I get to photograph there, I KNOW we’re going to get the most epic photos, and I get so excited. But even MORE excited when I get to work with a couple like Hayley and Zach. These two are so kind, gentle, welcoming, and just absolutely a pleasure to be around. The speeches that their parents and siblings made during the reception spoke volumes about who they are as people, and it was just wonderful to be a part of. The details and decor were SO PRETTY – there’s just something special about a wedding underneath a 100+ year old oak tree full of draping Spanish moss. The sun was shining, the birds were showing off for us, their guests were full of joy and of course, dancing. Forever grateful for these two, and I will be remembering this wedding day for a LONG time.

  • Ironclad Brewery Wedding Photographers | Ashley & Jill

Ashley and Jill chose the gorgeous Ironclad Brewery for their wedding, because of their love for local craft breweries. Even their dog is named Brew, and he helped out with SO much of the planning, it even incorporated into the theme of their day – “Me, you, and Brew”. They even had a custom tap handle made for pouring the beers, which was one of my favorite details from the whole day. Ashley and Jill, not only are they just the kindest people in the world, but they were so much fun to be around, I can’t remember the last time I laughed that hard on a wedding day. By the time I left, I felt like I was part of the family, and I’m so grateful for that. I loved every detail, every human pyramid (yes, they even had me do one with them and I included those photos at the very end because they are HILARIOUS), every sweet moment, and most of all, how absolutely head over heels these two are for each other. You could tell by the way they could not stop crying during the ceremony – it was so heartwarming. I am forever obsessed with these two and I wish we could do this every single weekend.

  • 128 South Wedding Photographers | Lindsay & Cooper

Okay so let me just start out by saying I could write a novel about how amazing it was to work with Lindsay and Cooper. First of all, they picked one of my favorite venues – 128 South in Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. Its proximity to the river and outdoor patio are two of my favorite things about 128 South, let alone the most incredible staff. But when you add in a couple like Lindsay and Cooper, it makes it about 100 times more wonderful. These two are the sweetest humans I’ve ever come in contact with. One of my favorite parts of a wedding day is listening to the toasts or speeches that their parents or closest friends make during dinner time, and the things these people had to say about Lindsay and Cooper were so moving. They are SO LOVED and adored by their people, I think that speaks volumes about them. Not only that, but when Lindsay walked down the aisle to an Andrew McMahon song, I knew these were my kinda people! Turns out, they are close family friends with Andrew McMahon and if you don’t know who that is, you’re wrong (Jack’s Mannequin, Something Corporate, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness). After dinner, they had the most fun reception where everyone did not stop dancing until the very end! I had the absolute best time, and I’m actually so sad that it’s over. Can we do a round two?????

    Congratulations to Lindsay and Cooper!!!!!

  • District Winery, Washington DC Wedding Photographer | Jackie & Beecher

This was my very first time traveling to Washington, DC. And I literally couldn’t think of a better reason to go. Jackie and Beecher found me online while they were planning their wedding day, and decided I was the right fit to bring to DC with them for their day! First of all, what a huge compliment that is. Second of all, I’m so glad they did, because they were two of the best people I could have asked to work with. Not only were they kind and sweet and down to earth, but they also designed the most gorgeous wedding that I was literally giddy to photograph. DC itself was stunning, but the Navy Yard where the wedding took place was SO unique. Water views, dogs everywhere, city scapes, cool bridges, I had no shortage of epic locations for photos. And then the venue itself, District Winery, was quite literally a dream. They transformed it with vivid pink flowers and something around 75 disco balls on the ceiling, I was in photo heaven. Grateful for opportunities like this one that let me travel to cool places, and work with the absolute best people. Thank you for having me, Jackie and Beecher, you sure throw one heck of a party! Can’t wait to see what you two do next!

  • Slate & Cypress Wedding Photographer | Jennifer & Zach

I had the pleasure of photographing Jennifer & Zach’s gorgeous March wedding at Slate & Cypress in Calabash, North Carolina. These two were just such a joy to work with, and their bridal party was the most fun and supportive and energetic group EVER. Jennifer and Zach also added on my 35mm film package which just so happens to be my absolute favorite thing, and I am beyond thrilled with how all of the film images turned out. I love getting to work at Slate & Cypress because this venue is already so stunning on it’s own, but the owners are always working so hard to constantly improve it, so there’s always something new and exciting to utilize for photos every time I’m there! This time, a brand new arbor was set up for ceremonies, and they’re working on growing tons of new greenery after winter is finally ending, so it’s just going to keep getting EVEN prettier! I think my favorite thing about this day other than how amazing everyone was to work with, was definitely Jenn’s dress. I mean, those sleeves, are you kidding me??? Literally so stunning. Now, check out some highlights from their beautiful day!

  • Travel Photographer | Peru

Two weeks in Peru was an insanely life-changing experience. I never thought I’d be able to see such a variety of places all in one country. It was my first time visiting South America, and it was my 28th country! I started out in the capital, Lima, in a big city, which is not at all how I envisioned Peru, but it was stunning nonetheless. I went to the mountains and got snowed on, I went to the jungle and sweat my life away, I visited cities, tiny villages, I truly saw every different variety all in one trip. It was pretty magical. When I was originally planning this trip, I wanted to do it all DIY with a friend and hire a car and just adventure around ourselves, but when I started looking into it, everything was so spread out and so far apart, and honestly, the idea of driving in a foreign country where I can’t understand the road signs or how the locals drive, is just all a bit much for me. So we booked a tour group, and I’m so glad I did. I tried a new tour company on this trip, and while I did truly love it, and it even included like 4 additional flights while I was there, it’s not something I would want to book solo. I’d definitely want to make sure I was booking with a friend so that I had someone to hang out with, since the tour ended up being primarily retired couples in their 60’s. Wonderful people to travel with, but I was happy to have a buddy! The company was called G Adventures, and they plant a tree for every day that you’re on the trip, as well as include activities on your trip that give back to the local community. I LOVED that.

Keeping my phone connected on my trip without paying Verizon’s $10/day plan, I used Airalo for my phone plan! It’s an app you download and it creates a digital SIM card for your phone, and you can go in and choose the country you’re traveling to and book a MUCH CHEAPER phone plan for your trip. I can’t recommend it enough. You can try it for yourself HERE!

    Lima, Peru

We flew into Lima, and arrived at night the first day. So all we did was walk around our neighborhood of Mia Flores, and get acquainted with the area. When we woke up the next day, we walked the whooooole day, just exploring and eating all kinds of delicious foods in our area. I really loved Lima. A totally different vibe than the rest of Peru, but not in a bad way at all! Big city vibes, tons of food options, a lot more westernized than the rest of the towns we visited. Still not a lot of English-speaking, but we were able to get by just fine.

    Cusco, Peru

We took a flight from Lima to Cusco with our new tour group, and immediately upon stepping off of the plane, I started feeling altitude sickness for the first time in my life. Cusco sits at about 11,000 feet in elevation, so it took a minute to get used to! Taking it easy on your first day there is my best advice, so you can acclimate. We walked around the city on the first day and explored. We were also warned to not eat the street food, and to be very cautious of food choices in this town, as it’s known to cause food illnesses from improperly cooked items or fruits and vegetables washed in the bad water. Luckily, we didn’t get sick. We also drank a lot of the local coca tea which is supposed to help with altitude sickness. On our second day in Cusco, we had one of my favorite days. We went to a women’s co-op where they used the fur from llamas and alpacas to weave many different items like blankets, clothing, bracelets, etc. They hand-dye all the fur with natural ingredients, and they made us tea and showed us the process. It was incredible to watch! I did a lot of shopping there, and felt like it was the best place to spend my money on the trip. We got to befriend llamas and alpacas and feed them! After that we headed to another local community with 12 local families worked together to make pottery. They taught us their process for that, as well as how to make empanadas, which were of course incredible.

    Ollantaytambo, Peru

This town was easily one of my favorites. Located in the Sacred Valley, it was the most charming little village. Winding roads and alleys, dogs everywhere, the smallest town square with adorable little restaurants. We only spent one night here as it was our way into Machu Picchu, but I just loved it here. We also did a hike here that was a straight 20 minutes hike directly UP, but once we got there, we saw the view of the entire town. STUNNING.

    Aguas Calientes, Peru

This was the town that everyone stays in to get to Machu Picchu. It is only accessible by walking, or by train. The time that we were visiting, there had just been some protests happening by the local workers, about ticket sales of Machu Picchu. The trains had been shut down, and if we wanted to get to Machu Picchu we were going to have to walk, with all of our luggage. It was going to be something like a 10k. But thankfully, the protests stopped at the last minute and we were able to take the train in! This town is clearly just a tourist stop, with not a whole lot to do. It was very small and very walkable, but so LOUD to sleep in that it wasn’t the best. The food was good, and there are hot springs that you can go visit. But mostly it’s a lot of little touristy-trap kinds of shopping. We spent one whole day in Aguas Calientes before waking up early the next day for our adventure to Machu Picchu! But that was plenty of time in this town.

    Machu Picchu, Peru

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE. We started super early this day, somewhere around 7am entry into Machu Picchu. We walked around for about 4 hours there. It wasn’t a super challenging hike aside from the first 20 minutes of straight steps up. But once you do that, you’re walking mostly flat surfaces the rest of the way. We chose the most challenging path because it has the best views, so I totally suggest that. Machu Picchu sits at about 8,000 feet in elevation so I didn’t feel the altitude up here at all. What an amazing thing to be able to walk through one of the 7 wonders of the world. I can’t even put it into words.

    Rainbow Mountain, Peru

This was hands down one of the most challenging hikes of my entire life. While I don’t claim to be an athletic person at all, I am decently young and able, and this was HARD. The hike itself was not that difficult, as far as physical fitness goes. Mostly it was a slow incline, on a dirt and rock path. The final 20 minutes or so are a drastic incline, and that part was definitely the hardest. But the worst part is, you are dropped off by bus after a 2 hour drive straight UP a mountain, at about 15,500 feet elevation. You then end up at 16,500 feet elevation. Just starting out the hike, I could hardly breathe. It was like the wasn’t enough oxygen to breathe into my lungs, and my legs felt like I was walking on the moon or something. But as long as you go slow, stop frequently, breathe, drink water, eat snacks, it’s completely doable. As soon as I got to the very top, I cried in relief and happiness, and immediately saw two llamas dressed up ready to take photos with me. WORTH IT. While this was incredibly difficult, I’m so glad that I did it, and I recommend it to everyone. What a view.

    Puerto Maldonado, Peru

When I tell you that I had no idea what to expect when I packed my things up and prepared to head into the Amazon jungle for the next couple days, I mean it. I love nature and new experiences, but the jungle was WILD, y’all. A flight into an airport with two gates, a two hour drive down what the locals called the “road to hell”, a two hour boat ride down the river, and we were there. The first night, I saw a tarantula in the wild at night. And our room was basically just a screened in porch, complete with a whistle on the wall to blow in case of emergency. Meaning, if a large jungle animal enters your room in the night. I slept inside of a bug net, in the 95 degrees, and 75% humidity. We jungle hiked, had no electricity, and saw SO MANY CREATURES. My favorites were definitely the monkeys. Lots of parrots, scary things, capybara, and one night time river boat cruise to look for white caiman. Nothing can beat the silence of the jungle and the ability to watch the stars on the boat at night. It was such a great experience, but I was ready to head back into the city after two nights!

MONEY: getting local currency before you go is always the best idea to avoid scams or overpriced exchange rates. It was very handy to have their currency on hand when wanting to shop at small stores, and even in credit card friendly areas like Lima, the service industry staff ALWAYS asked us to at least tip in cash. Some places the card machines stopped working, some places had no wifi or even electricity.
