As a wedding photographer, you go into every wedding feeling the same thing: excited to start the day and hopeful that everything goes smoothly. But when it’s above and beyond what you could’ve hoped for, you really know you’re lucky. Kristin and John got married in a beautiful church along the coast at Wrightsville Beach. The ceremony was so sweet, the readings were wonderful, their faces as they walked back down the aisle together as a married couple were absolutely priceless. These two were a blast, they were so fun and so laid back and excited at every event of the day. They had a bridal party that was willing to do anything the couple wanted, not a single complaint from anyone as we took photos under the hot sun on the beach. Kristin and John even rented a classic Wilmington Trolley to drive them from Wrightsville to their outdoor reception at the Fort Fisher Recreation Area, which sat right on the water as well. The speeches from their parents and siblings and friends were all so sweet and heartfelt, the first dances as the sun came down in the sky, the DJ rocking so hard that the power even blew for a second… I definitely couldn’t have asked for a better way to start my wedding season. I’m very thankful for the kind of couples that I get the pleasure of working with. By the time I packed my things to go, I stopped and looked behind me and smiled. You know you work with amazing people when your cheeks actually hurt from smiling when you leave. Thank you for having me, Kristin and John, I wish you both the best!!! We’re all guilty of it, let’s just admit it now. Pinterest has become a huge part in planning a wedding day. I think it can be an absolute gift sometimes, that something like Pinterest exists. However, it can also be the bane of a wedding photographer’s existence. I can’t tell you how many times in the past that I’ve been given a shot list, exactly like ones I’ve seen on Pinterest – “The 100 Images Every Bride Needs at Her Wedding”. I’ve had people literally type out lists like, “Bride getting makeup touched up, bride getting her dress on, bride getting walked down the aisle,” ……….You guys, we do this for a living. While this is probably your first wedding, this is our 150th. Every wedding is of course unique in it’s own way, but as the professional photographers, we know the drill. OF COURSE I’m going to take a photo of you walking down the aisle – I will not be sitting in the back twiddling my thumbs during this part of the day. OF COURSE I’m going to be taking photos as your dad spins you around on the dance floor, I will not be picking my nose at this time.

Some people like to send entire Pinterest boards to their photographer as well – which is nice in the way that we can get an idea of what kind of poses you like, but I’m a firm believer in trusting your photographer. When you pick your photographer, you should have fallen in love with THEIR work. You shouldn’t pick someone at random, and then ask them to recreate the last 87 pins you saved to your “OUR WEDDING XOXO” board. You should like the way they already pose their couples, the way they edit their images. When you hand a photographer a giant list of requested images, it’s going to get in the way of their creative flow. When we stop to consult a list every five minutes, we lose out on those “in betweens” and beautiful candid moments. Personally, I think candid images are so genuine and heartfelt, you get a lot more creative photos than you could’ve even thought possible.

One list that I do love? A nice big family portrait list. It helps speed the process along, and gets everyone in each photo they need to be in so you don’t even have to blink an eye or worry about forgetting someone during all the hustle and bustle.

I went to my first styled shoot/photographer workshop in downtown Wilmington the other week. It was put together and styled by Jacksonville photographer, Nicole of Darling Today. We set up shop at the Burgwin-Wright House on Market Street, which is an absolutely gorgeous venue, and met and worked with a handful of really talented vendors and local photographers. This was my first opportunity to photograph at the Burwin-Wright House and now it’s definitely going to be a place that I frequent. It had beautiful brick, big black and white patios on a classically Southern historic building, and it was overflowing with greenery. If it looked this beautiful in February, I can’t even imagine the colors that will sprout this spring. Anyway, we focused on working together to photograph these two sweet models, Alex and Lacey, as well as styling some images with invites and a cake. I had a blast laughing will some fellow creatives and making some sweet and romantic images. We also all played with different film cameras, including a Polaroid camera so old that I had never even used one like it – and if you know me at all, you know Polaroid is my favorite thing. Here are a few of my favorite photographs from our shoot, and please don’t hesitate to check out the wonderful vendors that worked together to make this happen. I’ve already got a styled shoot planned for this fall, and I can’t wait to start working on all of my millions of overflowing ideas!
